In the history of mankind, architecture has gone through major transformations. The world has seen a complete circle of modernism play out in the last decade or so. The modern world as we see it, is not so modern. Drowning in the scrapheaps of the so-called globalization era, the world has forgotten to analyze humanity as a utopia of opportunities, to leave a mark that will last a lifetime. As Rem Koolhaas elaborates through his idea of junk space, he says, “Junk space is what remains after modernization has run its course or, more precisely, what coagulates while modernization is in progress, its fallout.
Developed from the idea of aggregation, this project uses found objects of architectural relevance, from the real world, and juxtaposes them into a complex form and geometry, devoid of outside context or interaction. Our catalog of objects range from the Colosseum to tetrahedral. We use a range of complexity in shapes to highlight the tectonics of the interior and exterior. The interior mass, made from a shadow box projection of the exterior allows for interesting voids that have the opportunity to become simulation areas . The interior floor plates are staggered in a random manner to create interesting double heighted spaces at different parts of the building. The exterior aggregate looks more randomized than the interior. The intention behind such a move is to highlight the architect’s sleight of hand more for the interior than the exterior. We’re using the Tower of Babel as a precedent for materiality and texture of our building. We envision the library of 2050 to behold futuristic ideas on the inside but portray the traditional romanticism of a library on the outside.
